Piercings are allowed, but may alarm the metal detectors. Ideally, remove body piercings before security screening.
TSA Security Officers have to identify any metal that is detected at the checkpoint. If you set off the alarm, you will undergo additional screening. This includes a hand-wand and pat-down inspection.

Airport security screeners must try to avoid invasive pat-down searches of children. The announcement was made by TSA Administrator John Pistole at a Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee hearing. The security procedure has been under fire from travelers for some time but triggered public outrage in April, when a video showing a pat-down of a 6-year-old girl at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport was circulated. The agency says it will instruct airport screeners at checkpoints how to make repeated attempts to screen young children without invasive pat-downs.
